A swear or affirmation is when an individual signs an important legal document in the presence of an Officer of the Supreme Court and then "swears" that the contents are true.
Examples of documents to be sworn may include Statutory Declarations, Oaths for Executors and Oaths for Administrators.
All qualified solicitors are "Officers of the Supreme Court", so if you need a document to be sworn we should be able to help.
The solicitor will counter-sign the document and print his or her name, occupation and address etc, to confirm you have sworn the document correctly.
Please note that the solicitor who counter-signs your document is only verifying that you have carried out the swearing procedure correctly.
They are unable to give you - as part of this service - any legal advice as to whether the document has been correctly completed. Nor can they advise about the legal implications of signing that document.
If it is legal advice that you require, we can arrange for you to meet with one of our other specialist lawyers. If the advice is likely to be chargeable we will let you know before you incur any fees.
How much does a swear cost?
The cost is £5 cash for the sworn document and £2 for each exhibit/attachment (if there are any). Receipts are available on request.
You will also have to bring some identification with you (e.g. passport or driving licence and utility bill) to your meeting.
Please note that we are unable to swear "I.D.1 Forms" (which require us to certify your identity) unless as part of a transaction in which we are are already acting for you.
Certification of Documents
What is a 'Certified Copy' of a document'?
This is an exact copy of an original document, counter-signed by a solicitor to confirm that it is identical to the original.
You may have to send 'certified copies' of documents to other solicitors, Foreign Embassies, or Government Departments for example. The wording of the Certification will depend on the precise requirements of those asking you to provide it. Burroughs Day can assist with most certification requests, but we will need to know exactly what wording you require us to use.
Please ensure you find this out before you call for a quotation. Our fees will depend upon the wording of the certification required, as well as the number of pages that need to be certified.
Please note that endorsing ID1 and ID2 forms (used by the Land Registry) and counter-signing Passport Application Forms is not a service we are able to offer.
