When visiting your GP you trust that they will give you their full attention, listen to your medical problem, diagnose your illness and prescribe you some medication to make you better. But what happens if your GP prescribes you the wrong medication?
We understand that you must be feeling extremely upset, angry and let down and may also be dealing with the consequences of your GP’s incorrect prescription. We can help you to try to come to terms with what has happened and to possibly make a claim for medical negligence.
How could my GP prescribe me the wrong medication?
Often it is because your GP has not reviewed your notes properly and has not made him or herself aware of your medical history and therefore what medication you should not be given, whether because of an allergy, pre-existing condition (for example kidney disease, diabetes etc), or because of other medication that you are already on. In any event, such mistakes can have very serious consequences. For example, if you have an allergy to penicillin and your GP prescribes you with a medicine containing penicillin, you may well suffer an allergic reaction and possibly even anaphylaxis (causing your throat to swell and difficulties with breathing).
In your particular case it may be that your GP gave you the correct medicine but the dosage prescribed was wrong. The side-effects of this can be just as severe and a medical negligence claim will again be a distinct possibility.
