When it comes to the sensitive and long-term issues surrounding family law, children, separation and divorce, it's important to find an expert who can explain your options in plain English and help you through every step of the way. Meet Bristol-based Family Solicitor Jennifer Pollock.

Tell us about your role at Burroughs Day

I am a solicitor in the Family team. Most of my work involves acting for clients who are separating, in relation to both the financial and children issues arising from their separation, for example I advise them how their assets should be divided between them and what the arrangements should be for their children when they are no longer living together as a family.

I assist married clients with their divorce and unmarried clients in drafting Deeds of Separation. I also help people who are experiencing domestic violence or harassment in obtaining protective injunctions from the court. I draft pre-nuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements for clients who wish to preserve their assets in the event of a future separation. I work closely with the Residential Property team as my clients often require assistance with transferring or selling the family home and also the Wills team as getting divorced automatically affects your Will.

Our free Family Law Clinics give me the opportunity to meet a range of people in different circumstances, and I really enjoy helping them through a difficult period in their lives, by making the process as straight-forward and amicable as possible.

Any hobbies?

I love outdoor swimming and will happily swim or surf in the sea all the year around wind, rain or shine. I also love cycling and running and am hoping to have the time to train for a marathon in the next couple of years.

What is your favourite thing about your career?

I love meeting new people and I find it hugely satisfying to help my clients navigate an often stressful and emotional time in their lives with as much ease as possible. I also enjoy the fact that I am constantly challenged to learn new things, which keeps the job interesting and varied.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Bristol has such a fantastic food scene, and we're spoilt for choice with an office on Queen Square. I would be quite happy eating freshly made sourdough pizza followed by gelato from Swoon for the rest of my life.

Who would you want to be stranded with on a deserted island?

I should probably say my husband but if he wasn’t available Bear Grylls would be a close second.

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without?

A really good cup of coffee to wake me up in the morning.

What's the most daring thing you've ever done?

I travelled around Peru and Bolivia by myself on my gap year. It was a steep learning curve for me but a fantastic experience.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

I try to fit in a 5k run every morning in addition to getting two rather grumpy young children dressed, fed and to nursery before dashing to work so I have about a 7 minute window to shower, dress and do my makeup (hopefully it’s not too obvious!).

What is one thing you will never do again?

This is an easy one, Physics A-level! I still shudder at the thought of differentiating equations.
